Well, it's another of Spain's wild and crazy parties with partially unexplained origins, and is mostly used as an excuse to get together and have a good time.
What happens is, basically the whole city, and millions of people from all over, come to Valencia to party, drink, be merry, laugh, admire the falleras (women in the traditional Valencia dresses), dress up, see bullfights, watch a vintage car rally, get funkay, be loud, watch fireworks displays and ............... watch things get set on fire!
Las Fallas is actually the Valencian word for the fires.
All year, people throughout Valencia spend tens of thousands of Euros, hours and hours of their time and enegry into making huge ninots (paper - mache floats). They are usually satirical depictions of politicians, celebrities or current issues or events, and depict a social commentary on any number of things.
It isn't a parade; instead the huge paper - mache sculpters are placed throughout the city (they are ginormous structures!), and you can walk around the city - get in a good workout - while admiring the masterpieces.
Every year on the last day of Fallas the ninots are set stuffed with fireworks and set on fire at exactly midnight! And each year there is a vote and the most popular float is spared and put on display in the local Museum of the Ninot
